WIP Crit Sessions — Andriana Lagoudes

Developed in response to artists’ feedback, these sessions recognise that socially engaged practice often involves intense collaboration with others, while offering few spaces for peer exchange and care among artists themselves.
The Work-in-Progress Crit Sessions are facilitated peer-to-peer gatherings for emerging artists to share work that is unfinished, in development, or still taking shape. Each session brings together a small group of artists. More than one artist may share during a single session. The focus is on exchange, reflection, and attentive listening, rather than evaluation or outcomes.
Sessions last 3 hours and follow a gentle, structured flow: Artists who wish to share present their work-in-progress Peers ask clarifying questions before offering responses Feedback is guided by light facilitation to support care and focus Artists are invited to reflect on what they take forward Sharing is voluntary and scheduled through a flexible sign-up process. Artists decide when and how they share, and are not required to explain or defend their work. Across the programme, facilitation may occasionally guide listening through different lenses related to access and participation. These are not themes artists are expected to respond to, but ways of supporting thoughtful feedback.
These sessions were developed in response to feedback from collaborating artists who shared that while socially engaged practice is often collaborative, it can also be isolating. Many artists lack regular access to spaces where unfinished work can be shared without pressure. The Work-in-Progress Crit Sessions aim to create conditions where artists can think together, receive care, and stay with uncertainty, rather than rush toward resolution. The programme recognises that access to critique, visibility, and cultural networks is uneven, and seeks to address this through a supportive, peer-led format.
